We’ve seen in other states that these rulings are often later found to be in violation of federal ADA and FHA non-discrimination mandates for protected classes, like people in recovery from SUD. This means it’s entirely possible that a federal challenge to rulings like these in Missouri may very well be coming down the pipeline eventually. Through our network of certified sober housing and empirically based recovery principles, MASH’s goal is to help create and foster these safe living environments for those with substance use disorders. In Massachusetts, sober homes and recovery residences are different models for substance abuse recovery. Recovery residences —formerly known as halfway houses — are licensed residential treatment programs, while Massachusetts sober homes are peer-led and do not provide treatment. Sober homes provide mutual support, emphasize independent living skills, and depend on peer leadership. In Massachusetts, state agencies and vendors are only allowed to refer clients to MASH Certified sober houses. The mission of the MASH is to support individuals in recovery by ensuring access to high-quality sober living environments.

HEALTH

All community members are subject to random drug screens and daily breathalyzing. This is a critical part of our routine to ensure accountability. We provide the new comer with built in peer-based support, where help and a sense of fellowship, which is much needed in early recovery, can be found. MASH, in partnership with Safe Work Manitoba provides a reasonable standard for an effective safety and health program for the healthcare industry. MASH performance testing is key in validating the safety of road barrier systems before they can be approved for use on our roads.

• For example, if a local agency has implemented and updated its roadways and the safety devices used by road crews to meet MASH standards; FHWA will grant them a letter.
• Notably, MASH administers the Fire Sprinkler System Program (FSSP), which provides grants of up to $80,000 per home for the installation of fire sprinkler systems in MASH-certified sober homes.
• The crash performance is judged on structural adequacy, occupant risk, and vehicle trajectory.
• Policy prohibits the use of alcohol and/or illicit drug use or seeking.

This manual serves as a guideline to engineers, designers, and product alcohol rehab testers for conducting MASH Testing on temporary and permanent roadside devices. Operate within the residence’s scope of service and within professional training and credentials. Decline taking a primary role in the recovery plans of relatives, close friends, and/or business acquaintances.

There is also a state certification program administered by the Department of Mental Health and Addiction. Both certifications in Indiana remain optional, with little movement to make either mandatory. However, in 2017, a law was passed that made state certification a requirement for sober living homes interested in receiving state and/or federal funding. Forgoing state certification puts Medicaid dollars and any state or federal level grant programs out of reach for non-certified homes. A sober living home is beneficial to an individual’s recovery.
